Mechanical limiting factors affecting Radial Drilling Performance

The present configuration of the Radial Drilling System (RDS) and technology is subject to various mechanical limiting factors that either reduce its effectiveness or do not allow the system to operate. These factors are basically related to the well and its configuration.
RDS is redesigning several features of the today’s system and will systematically introduce reworked and new technologies to eventually have a system that can address all the limiting factors.
Limiting factors:

  • Casing size: The present system can operate in production casing sizes of 5 ½” (146mm) and up. The smaller 4 ½” (114mm) casing are possible but require a different casing cutting method to assure penetration.

  • Overlapping casing: The RDS system can only penetrate single layer casing. Liners that have an overlap in the hang-off section cannot be milled with the present configuration of the cutting system.

  • Casing grade: Hardness plays a main role in the ability of the milling bit to penetrate. The tungsten Carbide bits used are limited to casing grades of N-80 or less (Grade “d”).

  • Casing wall thickness: As designed the milling bit can penetrate a maximum wall thickness of 0.4” (10mm).
Casing cementation: At the planned exit from the casing the radial drilling system requires a good bond of the cement and needs to be assessed by CBL. Poor bonding generally results in a difficult start for the jetting operation.

  • Wellbore inclination: The system relies on gravity to be seated into the deflector shoe therefore the inclination from vertical should not exceed 30 degrees. Over this number the friction increases to such level that downwards movement stalls.
Wellbore depth: The present system is designed to a maximum depth of 2500 meters (8000feet) with slight surface changes this depth limitation can be increased depending on bottomhole conditions.

  • Wellbore rathole: Rathole (zumpf) requirements for the jetted debris to settle is approximately 10 meters (35 feet) per 4 laterals. Should this section not be available, circulation will be required.

  • Bottomhole temperature(BHT): Not to exceed 120 deg. C (250 deg.F).
Bottomhole pressure (BHP): Hydrostatic in the well not to exceed 6500 psi (440atm), unless special arrangements are made.
