Design of a Variable DC Power Supply
One of the important devices in any Electrical / Electronic lab would be a Variable DC Power Supply. The DC power supply is commonly used in different applications to convert an AC sinusoidal input voltage to a DC output voltage. These power supplies are designed to utilize single or three-phase inputs to output DC voltages that are fixed or variable depending on the intended purpose of the device.
Structures for these types of applications come in many varieties with a wide range of applications available to implement the desired outcomes. In this project, our aim is to design and implement a single-phase AC controller that outputs a variable DC voltage. The main purpose is to use the device at home to run or charge small DC-power devices including radios, mp3 players, telephone power supply, wireless devices, etc…
Input o 120V and 220 V AC (selection between the two modes using a switch for example)
Independent of load. o Current ripple must not exceed 20% of average load current. o Voltage ripple +5% of average voltage at full voltage.
Output voltage: 1~20 DC (variable or at least 6 set voltages, eg. 1.5, 3,
4.5, 6, 12, 20).
Max. Output Current: 2A max. o LCD display of the output voltage with 5% accuracy.
Max Height: 150 mm. o Max Width: 200 mm. o Max Length: 200 mm. o Weight: 1000 g approx. o The project cost should not exceed 400 SAR.
Students will be working in groups of 5 members chosen randomly.

Students must adhere to the templates that will be posted on blackboard.
Students are advised to identify the components needed for their design from the website www.digikey.com and submit the bill of materials including part number and quantity to the support person no later than Monday April 13th, 2014 at noon.
It is the students' responsibility to ensure the availability of the requested components from the supplier's website and make sure that the total cost does not exceed the amount mentioned in the statement above.
Once the components order is placed, it will not be possible to order any other components. It is the students' responsibility to solve such issues if they arise.
