why expansion joint are need in steel structure

السلام عليكم
I am going to design industrial building with 220 m width and 300 m in length
If I studied the effect of temperature on frames do I still need expansion joint?

you will need to have expansion joint/joints in the direction of the length of the building and you can take the effect of the temprature load along the width of the building
there is an equation in the steel construction manual 13th edition(black book) to calculate the allowed length of the building without having expansion joint from my experience and for difference in temprature equale to 25 degree this allowed length would go up to 70 m depending on if the building heated or not or if the building is air conditioned or not also the fixity of the base will have an impact as well the existance of restraints at the ends of the buildings like tieing it into concrete building.
all the previous factors affecting your allowed length without expansion joint
for your case for sure you will need for 5 expansion joints at leaset if you are building your structure in the middle east
for example in UK we can go up to 150 m without expansion joints

check steel construction manual 13th edition (the black book) page 2-30 for expansion and contraction joints

اشكرك على هذه المشاركة وبالاضافة لعامل فرق درجة الحرارة في تحديد الابعاد التي نحتاج لها لعمل Exp. J فاصل تمدد هناك عامل اخر حاسم في هذا الموضوع نوعية المنشأ المعدني من استخدام الجمالونات trusses او استخدام الاطارات frames ففي النوع الاول يمكن الوصول الى ابعاد 600 قدم اي تقريبا 200 م.

thanks a lot for this knowledge
But I still have some problems which are

If I followed the equations to determine the allowable length for expansion joint. Is that mean I need not to study the temperature effect? and
if I need to solve the frame with 200 m width without any expansion, is it enough to study the temperature effect or I MUST use expansion
joint?

along the width of the building you will take the effect of the temprature and combine it with the dead load and live load as per ASCE07-05 combinations chapter 2
along the length of the building you will divide the building into portions like you will need one expansion joint and you calculate the width of the expansion joint for the 150 m length as it is costly to have many double frames

the numbers of expansion joints I assumed in my first post was theoretical only but practically you will take only one expansion joint and calculate the width of this expansion joint.

double frame for expansion joint is cost, what do you think about making slots in purlins. is it enough or there any limitations for this long length
