Cement Based Plaster

METHOCEL™, WALOCEL™ and DOW™ Latex Powders products are all ideal for use in plasters, renders, and fillers. Plasters and renders are coverings made from plaster mortars or coating materials. They are applied to walls and ceilings in one layer or several layers of a certain thickness. Plasters form a solid surface on building structures and perform certain construction-related physical functions which depend on the properties and thickness of the mortars or coating materials used. At the same time they can be used to give a decorative surface finish.
Plaster must retain enough water for proper setting of the cement and to achieve high mechanical strength. Cellulose ethers from Dow Wolff Cellulosics improve water retention of cement-based plasters and offer these additional advantages:

  • Easy Mixing
WALOCEL and METHOCEL cellulose ethers, in plaster grades, dissolve very quickly, allowing the complete dispersion of all dry particles. METHOCEL additives enhance the lubricity of dispersed particles resulting in a smooth, homogeneous plaster. The surface activity of METHOCEL products helps entrain additional air for improved workability.

  • Application
WALOCEL and METHOCEL cellulose ethers improve the rheology of the plaster for excellent workability and consistency. Improved consistency allows smoothing and evening without sagging. METHOCEL products give the plaster an ideal amount of stickiness so it adheres to the substrate wall, not to the working trowel. The high water retention properties of METHOCEL cellulose ethers also prolong working time.
Machine plaster requires a cellulose ether which dissolves very quickly, builds up consistency before the plaster is on the substrate, and shows no post-thickening on the wall. METHOCEL cellulose ethers help produce a plaster with good pumpability, excellent workability characteristics, easy finishing, and a homogenous surface.

  • Final Plaster Properties
WALOCEL and METHOCEL cellulose ethers in the mix retain water for a longer period of time. Longer water availability means the cement can fully hydrate and develop high mechanical strength. This produces a plaster with a homogenous surface, smooth, lump-free finish, and greater resistance to cracks.



Gypsum-Based Plasters


Easy Mixing and Application
METHOCEL™ and WALOCEL™cellulose ethers enhance the lubricity of dispersed particles, resulting in a smooth, easily mixed, homogeneous plaster. METHOCEL and WALOCEL products improve water retention in gypsum-based plasters, significantly extending the time it can be worked. Larger batches can be mixed and applied if working with manual application.
METHOCEL and WALOCEL cellulose ethers ensure even consistency and plasticity of the mix for excellent workability. Plasters made with METHOCEL and WALOCEL additives spread and even out easily with a 'feel' that users appreciate. They enhance the bonding of the plaster to a variety of surfaces and ensure a greater resistance to sagging. Plasters formulated with METHOCEL and WALOCEL cellulose ethers adhere firmly as soon as applied, sticking to the wall, not to the trowel.
Final Plaster Properties
METHOCEL and WALOCEL cellulose ethers keep water available to hydrate the gypsum over a longer period of time - allowing high mechanical strength to develop. METHOCEL and WALOCEL products also inhibit crack formation and help form a homogenous plaster surface.
Indoor plasters made with METHOCEL and WALOCEL cellulose ethers finish easily to a smooth, perfect surface; particles of the mix are dispersed more evenly, without lumps.
