Dear Planning/Scheduling Engineer,

Could you help us knowing how you start your day, how often you meet with the project manager, with the owner, with subcontractors?, and how often you update/check your schedule?, please make it a practical answer, on your daily work..

Hello there
the work of the planning and scheduling engineer depends on the believe of the client in planning, if the client you do the project for do not believe in the planning work you will update the schedule a week before the monthly report come to the surface, and in the last 7-10 days of the month you will be running after every one in the project, the project manager, the construction manager, the RE, every one to get near accurate data to update your schedule by, and in this case you will never meet the client, may be you will meet the client once in the kick-off meeting

there are other clients that believe so much in the planning work, and this type of clients make you on you toes all the time, not just you as a planning and scheduling engineer, but every one that involve in this project, starting from the master plan, the baseline schedule going through every day update

i guess you are talking about the type B clients, that believing in the planning process, and with those clients the planning and scheduling engineer day starts like that:
1- check on the yesterday planned work, and the actual work done
2- check on today planned work, why some of yesterday work not done, what the plan to align between the accumulated work and the new work planned
3- update the schedule with % complete of your activity
4- report weekly with the activity that shall be closed to this week, in the early state, late state, how much total float do we have if we will delay, and which of these activities lies on the critical path that shall give us all a bad time
5- daily manpower and resource reporting update
6-monthly progress reports
7- s curve updates
8- justify what shall be justified
9- and always be ready and align with the project manager for plan B
