Monte Carlo Techniques

Background
Modern environmental modelling always involves uncertainties and estimates both in the model architecture and the parameters used. This in turn requires estimates of the importance of these uncertainties in the results and their applications. One common way of making these estimates is by numerical experiments on the model using the so-called Monte Carlo techniques.

This project is focussed on these techniques for the convection – dispersion equation.

Tasks
Undertake a brief review of the subject matter bringing out the salient features and theoretical background with particular attention to the techniques of solving the “inverse problem” of extracting a set of numbers following a given frequency distribution using a uniform random number generator.

Consider the longitudinal concentration distribution of an inert tracer 30 days after introduction as a step change as given by the Ogato and Banks equation and a 20 continuous stirred tanks in series as t models applied to convective dispersive flow though a sand column 500mm long and 20mm diameter being driven at 20ml/day

Using Monte Carlo techniques, construct a sensitivity analysis of the two models for reasonable parameter distributions of the variables. Do both model show the same behaviour under the same parameter distributions assumptions? Can the Monte Carlo techniques applied to the other parameters be used to simulate the phenomena of “dispersion” and diffusion themselves and would this be expected or not from the theory?
